PETRONAS calls Lewis Hamilton an “eight-time world champion”

In a recent social media post Mercedes’ title partner PETRONAS announced Lewis Hamilton as an “eight-time world champion”.

Yesterday it was announced that Malaysian oil and gas company PETRONAS will extend its title partnership with Mercedes beyond 2026, in a multi-year deal.

While posting a photo of Lewis at a PETRONAS event in Malaysia, the company wrote: ”A greeting worthy of an eight-time world champion”.

The company representative handling social media soon posted a correction:

“Oh. A bit confused due to anticipation. Thanks for writing to us guys. Seven times,” read the message.

Considering how many are still upset at how the 2021 season ended, this is not a completely surprising mistake.

As is well known, Lewis was denied his eighth title win at the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, after race director Michael Masi broke the rules which govern the use of the Safety Car. This basically gave Max Verstappen the race and title win on a silver platter.

Masi was later removed from his position by the FIA, and after an investigation, the governing body said he Australian made a “human error”.

This same ‘mistake’ was made by sports brand Puma earlier this year. The company billed Lewis as an “8-time FIA Formula One Drivers’ Champion” on a poster promoting their Mercedes merchandise, which was spotted in a Puma store in the Czech Republic.
