Sky Sports F1’s Rachel Brookes reports Lewis Hamilton’s move to Ferrari was a “surprise” for Mercedes, and adds that Toto Wolff was not present in person at the team’s staff meeting.

Today at 2pm GMT Mercedes held a staff meeting at their Brackley HQ to announce that Lewis Hamilton will be departing the team at the end of 2024, to join Ferrari in 2025.

Sky Sports F1’s Rachel Brookes was present outside Mercedes’ HQ to report on the meeting.

“They were all called in for an all-staff meeting at 2pm, we saw them all arriving and within less than 15 minutes they were leaving again,” Brookes said.

“It was a very short. Toto Wolff was thought to be here on the premises, he actually isn’t, he dialled in from abroad for that meeting which maybe shows you just what a surprise it was.

“The story first started circulating earlier on this morning in the media in Italy and in Spain and it gathered with such pace that that meeting was called here at Mercedes so that staff could be spoken to.

“We are expecting an official statement from the team this evening, perhaps around 7pm.

“We will hopefully hear an official statement from Mercedes and maybe Ferrari too on the details of this move,” she concluded.
