Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff says George Russell’s new contract has “already happened”, but they “just haven’t issued a major statement”.
George Russell’s current Mercedes contract expires at the end of the year, and with his team-mate Kimi Antonelli currently dominating the championship, questions are being raised about George’s future with the team.
When asked when the Briton’s new contract would be made official, Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff said the deal has already been done.
“That’s already happened,” the Austrian said.
“We just haven’t issued a major statement. There’s really nothing more to add.”
Although George is now 81 points behind his team-mate, in a talk with Autosport, Wolff reminded everyone of the Briton’s past successes.

“You can have good races, bad races, good years and bad years, but we’re talking about the driver that has won everything that you could have potentially won before.
“Every single karting championship, Formula 3 in his rookie year, Formula 2 in his rookie year, went into the Williams. We’re talking about the top driver.
“We need to find out what is it for him to be able to unleash that potential and of course, there’s the psychological side. If you have a run like him this year, you’re taking a beating.
“But the great ones, they recover, and I think that George has all it needs to fight for championships.
“And even if that one has maybe sailed, there will be more,” he concluded.
